Frecciarossa takes Italy’s high-speed rail model deeper into Europe

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy is preparing to turn one of its most recognizable transportation success stories into an increasingly European one. Beginning in summer 2027, Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa will connect Milan and Rome directly with Munich through Austria, marking a major new stage in the international expansion of Italy’s high-speed rail system.

The project brings together Trenitalia, part of Italy’s FS Group, Deutsche Bahn and Austria’s ÖBB. Rather than simply connecting Italy to neighboring countries, the initiative places an Italian train, brand and operating model at the center of a new cross-border network linking some of Europe’s largest economies.
