Fabbri is a fifth-generation, family-run Italian company best known for Amarena Fabbri, the semi-candied black cherries in syrup sold in the distinctive white-and-blue jar. The business began in 1905, when founder Gennaro Fabbri took over a small grocery with a cellar in Portomaggiore, near Ferrara. In the early years, the firm produced liqueurs and syrups; by 1914, it had moved to Bologna, where it remains headquartered today.
The turning point came around 1915, when Gennaro’s wife, Rachele Buriani, developed the house recipe for amarene in syrup that became the company’s signature. To celebrate it, Gennaro commissioned a white ceramic jar with blue decorations from Faenza master ceramist Riccardo Gatti, an object that evolved into one of Italy’s most recognizable food packages.
