Italy’s automotive landscape is changing rapidly, driven by electrification, new ownership models, digital highways and growing demand for smaller urban vehicles. Several developments in 2026 show how mobility in the country is moving beyond the traditional relationship between driver and privately owned gasoline-powered car.
Electric vehicles provide one of the clearest signs of change. Battery-electric cars reached 10.1% of Italy’s new-car market in June 2026, with 14,894 registrations during the month. Across the first half of the year, their share climbed to 8.4%, compared with roughly 5.2% during the same period of 2025.
