East Sacramento celebrates its Italian American roots with historic family exhibition

The Italian American families who helped shape Sacramento will take center stage at the “Little Italy Historic District” Family History Exhibit on Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The free event will take place at the Italian Center of Northern California, 6821 Fair Oaks Boulevard, Carmichael, California.

Organized by the Italian Cultural Society and developed by volunteers after more than a year of preparation, the exhibition brings together rare photographs, personal memories, historical documents, and family stories. It celebrates generations of Italian immigrants who established businesses, farms, churches, and community institutions throughout East Sacramento.

Sacramento's Italian roots extend back to the Gold Rush era of the 1850s. Families arriving from Liguria, Tuscany, Piedmont, and Sicily helped create a distinctive neighborhood between 48th and 59th Streets, bordered by J Street and Folsom Boulevard. The city officially recognized the Little Italy Historic District in 2021.

A special celebration reception will be held on Sunday, October 25, at 1 p.m., featuring light refreshments, an awards ceremony recognizing the exhibition's organizing team, and the presentation of a county resolution honoring Italian American Heritage Month.

The exhibition also includes family histories from other Sacramento neighborhoods, documenting the lasting contributions of Italian Americans to the city's development.

Visitors will discover the personal stories behind a community whose traditions and cultural identity have endured for generations, ensuring that the experiences of its immigrant pioneers remain an important part of Sacramento's history.
