DOP tourism grows in Italy with more events, visitors, and regional engagement

Italy’s food-focused travel sector tied to protected origin products is expanding quickly, according to the second Tourism DOP Report compiled by Fondazione Qualivita with Origin Italia and backed by MASAF. Based on 2025 data, the study shows a broader and more structured network of initiatives centered on PDO and PGI foods, confirming that local consortia have embraced new responsibilities introduced by EU Regulation 2024/1143, which formally includes tourism management among their roles.

A total of 667 activities were recorded in 2025, an increase of 73 compared to the previous year, equal to +12%. Growth is especially strong in events, with 292 initiatives – including festivals, tastings, cultural programs, and sports events – up +26% year over year.
