Di Sanzo: thanks to our work, IMU tax relief for Italians living abroad who own homes in small towns

By: Christian Di Sanzo

“The Democratic Party’s bill that we introduced in the Chamber together with Hon. Toni Ricciardi has been approved,” said Christian Di Sanzo, Democratic Party MP elected in North and Central America.

“The proposal originated from us, the Democratic Party deputies, and during the parliamentary debate it received the support of all political forces – every single group backed it. This measure was designed to protect Italy’s small towns, introducing different levels of IMU tax relief for properties owned by Italians living abroad in municipalities with fewer than 5,000 residents – areas deeply affected by abandoned buildings and demographic decline.

“In most cases, these are inherited family homes, properties that are not attractive on the market and therefore receive little investment. They represent the memory of the towns and of the emigrant families, yet many of these buildings are at serious risk of decay. With this measure, we encourage investment in properties that will no longer be a burden on families, but instead a way to maintain their connection to their hometowns.

“The law introduces three levels of IMU relief based on the property’s assessed value, with special attention given to smaller and more modest homes, which will receive full exemption in towns under 5,000 residents. Alongside IMU relief, we also secured a 50 percent reduction in the TARI waste-collection fee, recognizing that Italians abroad do not live in Italy and therefore do not generate significant waste – a fair and reasonable measure for many Italians who remain deeply attached to our country.”
