David Chase’s next story could spotlight Italian Americans building new lives in Italy

David Chase, the acclaimed creator of The Sopranos, is considering a new television or film project centered on a growing phenomenon that has attracted increasing attention in recent years: Italian Americans choosing to relocate to Italy and purchase homes in small towns and historic villages.

The idea emerged during a public conversation at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where Chase described his interest in telling the story of four Italian Americans returning to their ancestral homeland and discovering what contemporary Italy has to offer.

Rather than focusing on the past, Chase’s concept reflects a broader trend of Americans – including many with Italian heritage – exploring opportunities to live in Italy. Interest has been fueled by the country's high quality of life, rich cultural heritage, excellent food, slower pace, and the growing availability of restored homes in picturesque communities. Many municipalities have also introduced initiatives to attract new residents, including programs offering properties at symbolic prices or financial incentives for renovation, helping revive local economies and preserve historic villages.

For millions of Italian Americans, the move represents more than a lifestyle change. According to the latest U.S. Census estimates, more than 16 million Americans identify as having Italian ancestry, making them one of the nation's largest ethnic heritage groups. For many families, relocating to Italy offers an opportunity to reconnect with family roots while embracing modern Italian life, from vibrant regional traditions to world-renowned cuisine and strong community ties.

Chase's proposed story could introduce this experience to an international audience through characters navigating everyday life in Italy rather than revisiting familiar Italian American narratives. His vision highlights curiosity, cultural discovery, and the personal journey of reconnecting with ancestral origins in a contemporary European setting.

The project has not yet been officially announced or placed into production, but the concept has already generated significant interest because it reflects a real and expanding movement. As more Italian Americans explore relocation, dual citizenship, remote work, retirement, or second homes in Italy, their stories increasingly bridge two countries connected by generations of shared history, family heritage, and enduring cultural ties.
