Connecticut's most mispronounced word is a delicious Italian pastry - can you say it?

By: Jesse Leavenworth

Analysis of the most mispronounced words in each state turned up an Italian delight, sfogliatelle, in Connecticut, according to Unscramblerer.com. Pronounced sfo-LYA-tel, the flaky, ricotta-filled pastry is a fitting inquiry in a state with the highest percentage of Italian Americans (about 15 percent) in the U.S. After all, who wants to order at an Italian bakery in New Haven or Middletown and sound ignorante?

"Exposure to new words through media, music, pop culture and social platforms drives curiosity," says a news release sent Wednesday from Unscramblerer.com, a site designed to help people with crossword puzzles, Scrabble and other word problems and games. Researchers analyzed search data from Google Trends and Ahrefs, an AI marketing platform, from Jan. 1 to Oct. 27 this year, using the prompts, "How do you pronounce" and "How to pronounce," the release said.
