A Christopher Columbus statue removed from Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut, during the nationwide disputes over historical monuments in 2020 is expected to return to public display by October 2026.
The bronze monument was taken down on July 6, 2020, after Mayor Joe Ganim cited concerns about possible vandalism. Its removal occurred without prior authorization from Bridgeport’s Board of Parks Commissioners, creating a procedural and political controversy that continued for years.
The statue had been donated in 1965 by representatives of Bridgeport’s Italian American community. After its removal, it was initially kept in a former horse barn used by the city’s mounted police. In October 2022, it was moved to the Circolo Sportivo Italian American Club.
That November, the Parks Board unanimously transferred possession, care and control of both the statue and its marble pedestal to the Council of Italian American Societies of Greater Bridgeport. The organization was authorized to determine where and how the monument should be exhibited.
The local Italian American community is now financing its restoration. Supporters regard the statue as a symbol of the immigrants who helped build Bridgeport and argue that it was never legally given to the city outright.
Opponents remain determined to challenge its return. Activist Jorge Cruz has promised protests, arguing that Columbus represents colonial exploitation and violence against Indigenous peoples.
The dispute reflects a broader national debate over Columbus. For many Italian Americans, his monuments represent recognition after generations of discrimination. Critics, however, believe public memorials must also confront the consequences of European colonization. Bridgeport’s approaching reinstallation is therefore likely to revive an intense local conversation.
