Italian beef is one of Chicago’s most distinctive culinary creations – a sandwich made with thinly sliced, seasoned roast beef piled onto a sturdy Italian-style roll and covered with its flavorful cooking juices. It can be ordered dry, wet, or completely dipped, depending on how much gravy soaks into the bread.
Sweet peppers and spicy giardiniera are the classic additions. The sandwich emerged from Chicago’s Italian immigrant community during the early 20th century, when families transformed inexpensive cuts of meat into tender, richly seasoned dishes capable of feeding large gatherings.
Chicago will celebrate this beloved local specialty with the inaugural Chicago Italian Beef Fest, scheduled for Friday, July 31, through Sunday, August 2, 2026. The three-day event will take place at Jefferson Memorial Park, located at 4822 N. Long Avenue in Chicago’s Jefferson Park neighborhood.
The festival will be open from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday, noon to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. Organizers list admission at $10 per person per day, while children ages 17 and younger can enter free when accompanied by a paying parent or guardian. Visitors may bring chairs and blankets into the park.
Food will remain the centerpiece of the celebration. More than 8 vendors will present their interpretations of Chicago’s signature sandwich, allowing visitors to compare different combinations of beef, bread, gravy, sweet peppers, and giardiniera. Participating businesses include Bust Outs, Byron’s Hot Dogs, Carm’s Little Italy, Chef Ciccio, Frannie’s Beef and Catering, Genoa Italian Concessions, Leona’s Restaurant, and Trogo Kitchen Market.
Festivalgoers will also have the opportunity to vote for the Best Italian Beef Sandwich. The competition will recognize the restaurant that most successfully captures the flavor, texture, and generous spirit associated with this Chicago tradition.
Two stages will provide continuous entertainment throughout the weekend. Friday’s Main Stage program includes The Birkenrocks at 6:00 p.m. and Bostyxx at 8:00 p.m. Saturday’s lineup begins with School of Rock at 1:00 p.m., followed by The PriSSillas, Without U2, Simply Billy, and Sixteen Candles. Sunday will feature Bucket Number Six, The Wild Chicago, Simply Elton, and The Chicago Experience, which will close the Main Stage program at 6:30 p.m.
A second performance area, the Jefferson Park Forward Stage, will showcase local musicians and emerging acts. Its schedule includes Ian McKinley, Dexter, Emily Jane Powers, DJ Sliam, 8-Bit Creeps, The Prime, Salisman, Little Church, the Chicago Music and Acting Academy, and Jefferson Park Songwriters.
Beyond food and music, the festival will include crafters, community sponsors, local vendors, and a large children’s activity zone. The result will be more than a tasting event – it will be a neighborhood celebration of an Italian American creation that became an essential part of Chicago’s identity.
