Boston's second Monday of October will now be known as Indigenous Peoples' Day, taking place this year with a resolution to honor the original inhabitants of the Americas. According to Boston's official announcement, the city council has passed a resolution recognizing the cultural and historical significance of Indigenous communities, particularly those on whose land the city now exists.
Acting Mayor Kim Janey's executive order, dating back to October 6, 2021, began this shift, acknowledging the Massachusett at Ponkapoag Tribe as the traditional custodians of the territory. This initiative extends beyond mere acknowledgment; it encourages the city's 11,000 Indigenous residents, who come from across the United States, Canada, and Latin America, to reflect on and celebrate their cultural heritage, according to the city's statement.
