Township officials joined members of the Mount Carmel Society outside the municipal building Tuesday to raise the Italian flag in honor of Italian American Heritage Month. “It’s such an honor to be here,” Mayor Angie Devanney said, welcoming society members and council members to the evening ceremony before handing the program to Council Vice President Susan Poage.
Poage explained that President George H.W. Bush first proclaimed Italian American Heritage Month in 1989. The October observance coincides with Columbus Day and honors the history, contributions and culture of more than 17 million Italian Americans. This year’s theme celebrates the 250th anniversary of American independence and the Italian influence on the nation.
