As Mayor Ben Walsh's term nears its end, the fate of the Christopher Columbus statue in downtown Syracuse (NY) remains unresolved. Despite announcing plans to relocate the statue to Heritage Park in 2020, the monument still stands due to ongoing court battles and public debate over its racial implications.
Mayor Walsh confirmed that while the plan to move the statue is still in place, there is no set timeline for its relocation. "It will be up through my term as mayor. I am still hopeful we can continue that process forward. But we are not going to rush it," Walsh said. He emphasized the importance of proceeding carefully, citing issues faced by other communities that rushed similar processes.
