It started with spaghetti, garlic bread and homemade biscotti. It ended with a $10,000 check for babies who desperately need a safe place to go. This is what grassroots community service can do in our Region. This is how it worked for the Italian American Women’s Club of Lake County: In April, 2025, the organization hosted its first community spaghetti dinner, hoping to bring people together while raising money for a good cause.
The fundraiser exceeded expectations. So much so that more than a year later, the club’s members decided exactly where those dollars should go with its “Cuori Aperti” Award, Italian for “Open Hearts.” The name turned out to be especially fitting. The $10,000 award went to Safe Haven Baby Boxes, an organization whose mission is to provide a safe, anonymous option for parents in crisis and prevent the abandonment of newborns.
