In the waters of the Gulf of Naples, scientists have made an extraordinary discovery – a hidden coral reef unlike anything ever found in this part of the Mediterranean. Nearly 500 meters below the surface, inside the Dohrn Canyon, lies a vast and colorful ecosystem that is rewriting what we know about life in the deep sea.
The find was made by a team of marine researchers aboard the vessel Gaia Blu as part of a large oceanographic project called Demetra. Using remotely operated submersibles, the scientists explored the steep underwater cliffs and were stunned to see coral structures more than two meters wide attached to vertical walls over 80 meters high.
