The Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans is accepting applications for its 2026 scholarship program, providing Illinois students of Italian heritage with awards ranging from $1,500 to $6,500. Applications for the main fall opportunities opened June 1, with deadlines falling on September 15 or November 1.
The Jo Ann Serpico Scholarship offers up to $2,000 to Illinois residents with at least 50% Italian ancestry. Selection considers academic achievement, leadership and community service. Applicants must be admitted to or enrolled at an accredited higher-education institution and submit their materials by September 15. Recipients will be notified by October 1.
The Marie Palello Scholarship also provides up to $2,000. It recognizes students with at least 50% Italian heritage who demonstrate academic success, leadership and service to their communities. Its application deadline is September 15.
The largest 2026 award comes from the Nick and Helena Patti Foundation Scholarship, worth up to $6,500. Priority is given to Illinois college students studying music beyond their freshman year, particularly applicants who are orphans or were raised in foster care. Students pursuing other academic fields may also apply. The deadline is November 1.
The Frank J. Vigilante Scholarship provides as much as $5,000 to Illinois students of Italian extraction who combine strong academic performance with demonstrated financial need. Applicants must include an essay of no more than 500 words explaining how the scholarship would support their personal and professional goals. Applications are due November 1.
The Joseph U. Bottalla Memorial Scholarship offers up to $1,500 and allows recipients to reapply annually. Candidates must be Illinois residents with at least 50% Italian ancestry and must have studied Italian for 2 years or currently be taking an Italian-language course. A 500-word heritage essay is required by November 1.
Every application and its supporting documents must be submitted electronically as one complete PDF. JCCIA has awarded more than $250,000 to students of Italian heritage over the years, with its 2026 program continuing that investment in education, community leadership and cultural identity.
