120-year-old historic Italian staple Barbetta closes in NYC

By: Dominique Jack

After serving Italian cuisine to theater performers, New Yorkers and visitors for more than six decades, the historic Italian restaurant Barbetta served its final meal. The eatery, which specializes in cuisine from the Piemonte region of Italy, closed its doors on Friday, concluding its run as one of the oldest family-owned restaurants in New York City.

“For more than six decades, Laura’s vision shaped this beloved house, and it was her wish that guests continue to gather here in the spirit she cherished.” The announcement of Barbetta’s closing comes after the passing of its owner, Laura Maioglio. The New York native took over in 1962 after her father and the restaurant’s founder, Sebastiano Maioglio.
