The 2023 world finals of women's individual foil gives Italy a cracking Azzurro derby, as well as two stupendous medals. Alice Volpi took the gold, able to win 15-10 and bring the Tricolor back to the top step of the podium five years after her last victory, also hers, in Wuxi 2018. Arianna Errigo, on the other hand, closes with a very shiny silver medal after almost a year of inactivity from competitions and thus wins the 21st rainbow medal (including team events) of her career.
The podium, moreover, is almost entirely monopolized by the Italian women foil fencers, as Martina Favaretto hits the bronze medal alongside Olympian Lee Kiefer. With these three medals, Italy rises to a total of 5 in these 2023 World Fencing Championships, as well as to 366 rainbow metals in its history, thus confirming how important and rooted the tradition of this discipline is in the Bel Paese.
Three medals that also represent a nice viaticum ahead of the team event, where Italy will want to defend the gold won in Cairo in 2022.
