The extent and superb engineering quality of the ancient Roman roads have long been famous. Some Roman roads built thousands of years ago still exist. Some of these roads had impressive bridges and other supporting infrastructure (the longest Roman bridge still standing is in Merida in Spain).
Another famous ancient road network is the impressive Inca road network (the largest road network in the Western Hemisphere). The Inca roads were very different in part to that the Inca never invented the wheel.
