The earthquake that struck Emilia Romagna in 2012 also hit the beautiful Rocca di Vignola in the Modenese Apennines. The charming red brick castle (today owned by the Foundation of Vignola chaired by Valerio Massimo Manfredi) stands with three towers over the area of Vignola near the river Panaro, in a ring of rolling hills and sweet orchards (the famous cherries of Vignola).
The first news that we have of it dates back to 1178, but the castle's moment of glory started from the Fifteenth century, when the nobleman Uguccione Contrari became the overlord of these lands, and he promoted its expansion and decoration.
