The City of Salerno, with the support of the Presidency of the Campania Region and Scabec, with the extraordinary collaboration of Ellis and Statue of Liberty Island Foundation, the Consulate General of Italy in New York and Slideworld, will implement the project SLIDEDOOR: The World Needs a Door.

Beginning December 21, 2021 and ending June 21, 2022, SLIDEDOOR will be an "open door" between the ancient Cathedral of San Matteo in Salerno and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum in the United States. The SLIDEDOOR is one of the most innovative interventions of Digital Humanism existing on the planet at this time.

Through this life-size video-portal, it will be possible to open real INTRALUOGES in real-time living between the two countries, giving the possibility to all citizens, to live the experience of having in front of them, standing, people and places in reality very distant, but close and united in a history that has made strong and great our nations. Entering the Cathedral of Salerno will result in ideally connecting to New York, to a place with one of the most moving and powerful links between the United States and the City of Salerno: Ellis Island.

It will be so that after December 21st every person who goes to the Cathedral of Salerno will be able to "meet" the thousands of daily visitors of Ellis Island, will be able to talk, tell, listen, reflect on thresholds and boundaries, meet distant relatives, play in contests that will allow a prize trip, will be able to participate in the program of meetings, events, cultural, artistic, musical, which will present the excellence of a Salerno ambassador of Campania in all its sectors.

Through Ellis Island passed the twelve million immigrants who arrived in America in the last century, from there passed all the people of Salerno who crossed the horizon of the ocean in search of their own personal legend, in search of America. The history and memory of each of them is intimately linked to this place. And it will be there, in the heart of the Museum of Immigration at Ellis Island, welcomed by the American Family Immigration History Center that the other SLIDEDOOR "door" will be placed near the "Kissing Post".

The "Kissing post" was historically the "place of greeting, the place of kissing," the point where each of the twelve million immigrants who came to America in the last century met their relatives, met America and its promise. The soul, the memory and the energy of the men and women who built America, still walk by those stairs and among those men and women, you find many Salernitans. It is also our history.

This "door" between Salerno and New York will be an opportunity to open and tell our community this story, which is a common story that will make us appreciate what unites us rather than what divides us. Salerno thus opens a DOOR to the future, to the world, to trust. With courage and futuristic ingenuity, it accepts the challenge that the historical moment imposes on the world: to support the territories and human ties with originality and vision, using contemporary digital languages and tools that are able to dialogue with a Humanism that always puts Man and his uniqueness at the center.
