As the migrant crisis in Italy grows, the Italian government is ramping up pressure on Brussels for a European strategy on immigration. Two joint moves with which the Government ups the ante in a very delicate game: one to Brussels by proposing a "migration compact." And the other to Austria: "If Vienna violates the rules it will hear from us," said Prime Minister Matteo Renzi referring to the announced construction of abarrier between Italy and Austria at the Brenner pass.
"To our Austrian friends I say that the Brenner pass is not only the tunnel to connect our countries, the Brenner Pass is a place of work for many companies, and is a symbol," said Renzi. The closing of the border would put the EU at risk, Renzi said.
