Here is a selection of the most beautiful. Narrow and often hidden from view, Italian vicoli (alleys) are some of the most typical, picturesque and colorful examples of urban architecture which characterizes Italian small towns.

Typical of the medieval urban fabric, they are secondary streets surrounded by houses, which have maintained intact their ancient and timeless charm. Some of the most ancient and famous ones are those you can find in Liguria, especially in the city of Genoa: best known as carrugi, these narrow alleys are so picturesque and rich in charm and history to have been source of inspiration for artists of all times.
