Iowa is a hub of great Italian food, but hidden in the small Fayette County city of Oelwein might be one of the state’s best-hidden gems. Not only does Leo’s Italian Restaurant serve up huge portions at reasonable prices, but it’s also been dishing up its famous fare since 1922. As it celebrates its centennial, this three-generation family-owned legend has a lot of memories to celebrate.
Leo's has been serving great Italian food in Oelwein since 1922 when Frank and Angelina Leo opened it as a humble grocery. But it was their eldest son Nick who created the Leo's everyone knows today when he opened a Tavern in 1940 filled with old family recipes that are still used to this day.
