On August 29, 1969, something burned at Italian People’s Bakery on Butler St. — and it wasn’t the bread, cakes or cookies created at the famous business. Bread turned to toast and cookies crumbled that infamous day as an early-morning fire fully engulfed the building. Several families lived above the bakery, including owners Joseph Guagliardo, his wife, Phyllis, and Carmen, who now owns and manages the popular business.
"It's fifty years from Thursday. I remember quite a bit," Carmen Guagliardo. "I was 19 turning 20 in September and I worked here all summer. We had just purchased a new mixer which would mix dough faster. We wanted faster dough, too."
