The Italian American Lawyers Association and California Women Lawyers will each hold a meeting next month featuring advice on how to land a judgeship.
IALA's meeting is slated for May 15 dinner and will be held at Casa Italiana, 1051 N. Broadway, just north of Chinatown. The cocktail hour will start at 6 p.m., with dinner and the program following.
The discussion is labeled, "The 411 on Becoming a Judge: Information Night on Judicial Appointments and Elections."
Participating in the program will be Alice Salvo, a former chair of the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation; Joshua Groban, Gov. Jerry Brown's senior advisor for policy and appointments; Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Randolph Hammock, who gained office through election; and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jeff Winikow, a recent Brown appointee to the bench.
The cost to attend, for those who make a reservation by May 10, is $35 for IALA members, affiliates and retired judges, and $40 for non-members. Those without timely reservations will be charged an extra $5.
Sitting judges are admitted free, with or without reservations.
Reservations can be made by e-mailing [email protected] or telephoning (213) 891-4845.
CWL calls its program "So, You Want To Be A Judge?" The event, co-sponsored by the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 18, a Saturday, at UCLA School of Law, 385 Charles E Young Drive East, #1112.
A Continental breakfast will be served during the registration period from 9:15-10 a.m.
Groban, along with Lara Krieger, the current chair of the JNE Commission, will speak in the morning. Moderators will be Court of Appeal Presiding Justice Kathleen O'Leary of the Fourth District's Div. Three and Contra Costa Superior Court Judge Diana Becton.
The lunch speaker will be Alameda Superior Court Judge Brenda Harbin-Forte.
An "Ask the Judges" workshop is slated to take place from 1:15-3 p.m., featuring 14 jurists. Among the Los Angeles Superior Court judges who are scheduled to participate are Bobbi Tilmon, Michael Carter, Dianna Gould-Saltman, Patricia Titus, Mildred Escobedo, and Laura Walton.
There are seven price categories ranging from $75 for students to $325, with registration combined with joining CWL. Registration is available online at http://sywtbaj.eventbrite.com/#.
