The Italian Consulate in Detroit, under the leadership of Consul Allegra Baistrocchi, recently hosted a memorable evening dedicated to “Roots Tourism,” an initiative spearheaded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event featured Luigi Maria Vignali, Director General for Italians Abroad, who introduced the innovative “Italea” program to a distinguished audience of community leaders, culture enthusiasts, and guests of Italian descent.
The evening included an in-depth video and a comprehensive presentation, emphasizing the significance of Roots Tourism—a growing movement reconnecting descendants of Italian emigrants with their ancestral homeland.
As Vignali explained, the goal of Roots Tourism is to spark curiosity among the descendants of Italians who emigrated around the world between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in North and South America, Australia, and South Africa. This initiative offers a unique opportunity to visit Italy and explore the towns and villages their families came from.
In his speech, Vignali expressed gratitude to Consul Baistrocchi for hosting the event and thanked all the attendees, stating: “Roots Tourism is a way for people of Italian descent to reconnect with their identity and experience something truly unforgettable in Italy. It’s not just about visiting famous landmarks—it’s about discovering the heart of Italy: its villages, its traditions, and the places where our ancestors began their journey.”
The highlight of the evening was the introduction of “Italea,” a multifaceted initiative aimed at promoting Roots Tourism. The name “Italea” comes from the Italian word talea, which refers to a cutting from a plant that can be replanted to grow new roots. This symbolic concept reflects the flourishing of Italian communities around the world and their deep ties to their homeland.
Vignali shared with the audience the remarkable success of the Italea program, launched in March 2024, which has already attracted over 1.5 million visits to its national website and connected a growing number of Italian families with their roots. The program includes a virtual “Italea Card” that provides tourists with special discounts and benefits through more than 720 commercial partners, including major Italian institutions like ITA Airways and Poste Italiane.
In 2024, the “Year of Italian Roots Worldwide,” the Italea program was featured at major events across the globe, including five in the United States, reaching around 1.5 million people. The initiative also embraces the intersection of roots tourism and religious tourism, acknowledging the importance of religious traditions in the lives of Italian communities abroad. Vignali highlighted the connection between religious celebrations in Italian American communities and those held in Italy, underscoring the shared cultural and spiritual heritage that unites Italians around the world.
Guests also had the opportunity to watch a series of compelling videos showcasing the personal experiences of individuals who embarked on their own “journey of rediscovery,” including a touching story by the Honorable Anthony Rota, former Speaker of the House of Commons in Canada, who visited Calabria—the land of his grandparents—last summer.
At the close of the evening, Vignali encouraged attendees to explore the possibility of tracing their own roots, stating: “I hope tonight’s presentation and videos have inspired you to take your own journey to Italy. Whether it’s a trip to explore your family’s cultural heritage or simply a deep dive into the rich culture of our country, the Italea program offers an unparalleled opportunity.”
