As Christopher Columbus Day came to a close Monday, Detroit's own Christopher Columbus statue stood defiled by vandals. For most of the day, a hatchet stuck from the center of the Italian explorer's likeness. A bystander climbed up and removed it about 4 p.m., remarking that it was disrespectful.
Tape that held the weapon in place and the red paint mimicking blood coming from the faux wound remained. Mayor Mike Duggan Deputy Communications Director issued an email Monday evening saying the city plans to have the statue cleaned up Tuesday. A crew wasn't available Monday.
