Baltimore County Republicans, Italian Americans Call For Protection Of City Columbus Monuments

By: Tyler Waldman

Republican state delegates from outside Baltimore City joined with Italian American activists to call for monuments to Christopher Columbus to remain up and dedicated to the explorer. This week, City Councilman Ryan Dorsey called for rededicating the Columbus Obelisk to honor victims of police brutality.

Del. Kathy Szeliga, a Baltimore County Republican, also called on Mayor Bernard C. "Jack" Young to ensure the monuments to Columbus are protected from vandals. "And secondly, we have to address the rewriting of American history," Szeliga told C4. "Christopher Columbus was a great man. His exploration changed the course of our world and there are a lot of false narratives around Christopher Columbus, so we have to address both at the same time."
