If you can't sneak away to bucolic Tuscany this week, then stop by the Italian Cultural Institute instead and drink in calming Italian landscapes by Hans Schirmacher. His use of subtle shades and soft nuances to capture landscapes from different parts of Italy pairs dramatically with sharper lines and contrasts that trace the varied architectural styles found around the country, often shown in the twilight hours whose light picks out their essential contours.
Hans Schirmacher, born in Amsterdam in 1933, obtained a degree in drawing and lithography at the Institute for Graphic Arts. He travelled through France, Germany and Austria and worked for a short period as an assistant to a set designer in a theatre.
