The Grammy-nominated early music ensemble Ars Lyrica Houston continues its 10th anniversary Discoveries season with the modern world première of Alessandro Scarlatti's La Sposa dei Cantici on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 8 pm in Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Artistic Director Matthew Dirst gives a pre-concert lecture on Alessandro Scarlatti and his music at 7:15 pm.
Last heard in Naples in 1710, this 1703 oratorio is a love story whose characters reflect the blending of Christian and pagan traditions during the Italian high Baroque. Scored for four allegorical characters—Sposo (husband), Sposa (wife), Divine Love and Eternity—the work is a musical conversation about both human and divine love.
