Robert De Niro, who has wowed filmgoers since the 1960s, turns 70 years old on Saturday (August 17). The Italian-American actor, known for his Oscar winning roles as mob boss Vito Corleone in "The Godfather, Part II" (1974) and boxer Jake LaMotta in "Raging Bull" (1980), has become a staple of cinema and is considered an archetype of the classic New York actor.
De Niro started appearing in films in the mid-1960s, and began to make a name for himself in 1973 with "Bang the Drum Slowly," in which he played a dying major league baseball player. Soon after, he was cast as a young version of Vito Corleone in the second installment of Francis Ford Coppola's "Godfather" film series, winning an Academy Award for best supporting actor in a role that consisted of him speaking in several Sicilian dialects.
