Rossini Under the Stars

In conjunction with the Rossini Opera Festival ROF (August 11-23), a yearly international music festival held in August in Pesaro, the birthplace of Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868), and on the occasion of 150th anniversary of the composer's death, the IIC will host three outdoor screenings of operas from the stages of the ROF.

La scala di seta (The Silken Ladder), Il Signor Bruschino, and La cambiale di matrimonio (The Bill of Marriage), Rossini's first operas, are all farse composed by a young Rossini between 1810 and 1813. LA SCALA DI SETA - The Silken Ladder. Rossini's sparkling 1812 farsa comica in one act weaves a burleasque tale of gentlemen climbing in and out of a lady's bedchamber on a silken ladder. Screening of a a modern-day production by Damiano Michieletto from the 2009 Rossini Opera Festival. Join us for a toast celebrating 150 years of Rossini before the screening! August 9 | 8 PM

IL SIGNOR BRUSCHINO. From the 2012 ROF, the innovative theatre company Teatro Sotterraneo has transferred Rossini’s 1813 light-hearted one-act operatic farce into a modern-day theme park, complete with a popcorn stand and balloons. A ‘clever production’ (New York Times) not to be missed. August 16 | 8 PM

LA CAMBIALE DI MATRIMONIO - The Bill of Marriage. Composed by Rossini in 1810 when he was just eighteen years old, this farsa comica in two acts revolves around the attempts of Tobia Mill, a rich English merchant, to combine business with pleasure by forcing his daughter to marry his rich colonial correspondent from America, by means of a bill of exchange. Filmed at the ROF in 2006. August 23 | 8 PM
