Schenectady’s Cappiello Foods to close after 101 years

By: Chad Arnold

Cappiello Foods, an Italian specialty store and city staple for more than a century, will be closing later this month, the shop’s owners announced last week. “After 101 years of business in Schenectady we are announcing today that we will be closing our doors on March 19th,” reads a message posted on the store’s Facebook page by Serena Cappiello and Adrien Washington-Cappiello, the business’s third- and fourth-generation operators, respectively.

While the message goes on to say a number of factors went into the decision, including “supply, economic and health reasons,” it ultimately came down to the final wish of Mary Cappiello, who operated the business for more than 75 years up until her death in 2019.
