For good reason, Columbus Day is a traditional cause for celebration on Staten Island. This borough has long been the most Italian-American county in the United States. So there are big expectations following Borough President James Oddo's announcement that plans are being made for the debut of a major new holiday festival.
Set for Saturday, Oct. 11, is "Rome through Richmond Town: A Celebration of Italian Culture," a free six-hour festival designed to replace the annual Columbus Parade. "This will be a bigger and better way to celebrate," said Mr. Oddo, who decided to end the New Dorp Lane march sponsored by the BP's office in favor of the expanded new event.
