It is one week until the annual Columbus Day celebration in Pueblo. It’s an event that News 5 has covered for years as it continues to spark controversy in the city and beyond. The event started when the Columbus Monument, which is front of the Rawlings Public Library, was built more than 100 years ago.
For 25 years an organized protest against the celebration has also taken place. "The hope is to continue to build education. We know that through the legislature that will be how we abolish Columbus Day." It’s a goal that Rita J. Martinez has had for many years. She’s the organizer of the annual Anti-Columbus Day Demonstration.
