In the season of funnel cakes, fried bacon and elephant ears, you'll find us lining up for a more Italian fried snack. Panzerotti come from Puglia, the country's Southeastern heel, and are commonly described as mini, deep-fried calzones. Think of them as crescent-shaped Pizza Rolls, only better.
The city's first proper taste of panzerotti comes from Bari, a simple gray-and-white food cart run by Puglia native Walter Ferrante. Bari's panzerotti are sold in two sizes, small ($3-$4) and large ($7-$8), with fillings ranging from the simple, like tomato and mozzarella, to another bursting with briny anchovies and capers.
