As of 2022, the Earth has 8 billion human beings. By 2050, the population is expected to grow to 10 billion. In the past 100 years, the world's population has more than quadrupled. This series of 3D maps by Terence Teo, associate professor at Seton Hall University, try to visulize the population density of six countries using open source data from Kontur Population. He used the popular R programming language and a path-tracking package, Rayshader, to create the maps of Italy.
Despite having a large population of 59 million and large metropolitan areas everywhere, the population peaks in Italy are closer to the sea. The port cities of Genoa, Naples and Palermo all have strong peaks compared to the rest of the country, as does the capital, Rome. Although its urban center is 15 miles inland from the sea, it extends to the coast through the district of Ostia, where Rome's ancient port existed.
