Vietri sul Mare is a small town in southern Italy, along the Amalfi Coast. Located just about three miles to the east of Salerno, it is considered the gateway to one of the most famous stretches of coastline in the world. Unlike its more glamorous neighbors such as Positano and Amalfi, Vietri sul Mare has a quieter charm, paired with a strong local identity that attracts visitors who appreciate its history, craftsmanship, and stunning setting.
The town’s name, Vietri, is believed to derive from the Latin Veteri or Vetri, meaning “ancient,” possibly referencing an early settlement in the area. The addition of sul Mare clarifies its position by the sea. Archaeological findings suggest that the area was inhabited during Roman times, and some historians link Vietri to the ancient city of Marcina, a maritime trading center mentioned by classical sources. Over the centuries, the town became known for its skilled artisans, particularly in the production of ceramics.
