Unearthing History: Medieval Tomb and Lost Church Discovered Beneath Venice's Piazza San Marco

By: Quadri Adejumo

Imagine strolling through Venice's Piazza San Marco, the echo of your footsteps mingling with the murmur of centuries-old secrets lying just beneath the surface. This isn't a scene from a historical novel; it's the reality of a recent archaeological find that has reconnected Venice with a long-lost chapter of its medieval past.

Beneath the famed square, archaeologists have unearthed a medieval tomb and the ruins of the once-lost church of San Geminiano, offering a rare glimpse into the life and death of ancient Venetians. During a restoration project aimed at the square's paving stones, the team stumbled upon a significant historical find: a rectangular brick tomb containing the skeletons of seven individuals, including an 8-year-old child, a woman, and five adults.
