Trains have played an important role in Italian history since the first half of the 19th century, when the country started laying down its first railways – State property to this day, although since 2000 private company trains have started running on them.
British writer Tim Parks has recently published a beautiful book about his experience as a commuter on Italian trains ("Italian Ways" interviewed him about it). Here is a short excerpt from it, providing a fitting introduction to the wonderful illustrations we have selected.
