Did Roman women wear bikinis? It would seem so, according to late-imperial mosaics of Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina (Enna), Sicily. The mosaic floor of one of the rooms of the Villa depicts 10 girls participating in an athletics competition and wearing something very similar to our two-piece costume. Villa del Casale is a late Roman rural estate, the remains of which are located in Piazza Armerina (Enna). Since 1997 it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A former luxury residence from the fourth century AD, it covers an area of 3,500 square metres. It is an extraordinary place for art history, especially thanks to the presence of large beautiful mosaics, which cover the floor of the whole Villa.
