Saints and pinups: personal shrines of Palermo – in pictures

In 2014, Emma Grosbois visited Palermo in Sicily to photograph the deeply personal shrines made by locals, paying respects to the dead as well as the living. She describes them for us: 'Here we have a minimalist style of shrine in a fruit and vegetable shop. The owner said: "These images represent the people dearest to us, those who I like to see here everyday, those people who aren't here any longer. Having them here is as if they were actually here with me."' Those Who Watch Us is exhibited at Circulation(s), the Young European Photography Festival to 7 August.

'At Giorgio's place I found an astounding constellation of images: pizza box, tiger, St Joseph, naked women, old Italian lira banknotes ... He is close to retirement and this place will soon disappear.'
