When it comes to looking for red wines with moderate-level alcohol with finesse and restraint, the Prosecco wine area is probably the last place in Europe that one might consider. Prosecco, known for the sparkling wine made by the semi-aromatic grape variety called Glera that is sourced in designated areas of Veneto, Italy, is extremely popular and its success has over-shadowed a niche specialty in the same place.
Prosecco can be divided into many classifications but the top of their quality pyramid lies in two areas: Valdobbiadene DOCG and Asolo DOCG. Asolo Prosecco DOCG is the lesser known of the two DOCGs but also has a couple of designations for red wines in the eastern Montello section of Asolo, and the red wines of Montello have had a great local reputation for decades.
