The largest mountain group in the Dolomites, and arguably one of the most beautiful, the Pale di San Martino extend for 240 square km in eastern Trentino and part of the province of Belluno in Veneto, northern Italy. They formed 300 million years ago, and today they are the setting of a much beloved tourist area.
The Pale are mountains of coral origin. About 300 million years ago, in a calm and shallow sea, huge colonies of corals multiplied and ended up creating cliffs higher than 1,000 meters. When they surfaced, the coral reefs began being shaped by weather factors, resulting in the magnificent spires, peaks and edges we admire today.
