Macroeconomic indicators point to mild signs of recovery from crisis-stricken South

After seven years of persistent economic disgrace, the Italian "Mezzogiorno", or South, has started recovering: tenuous signals of economic revival have finally stopped the financial downfall. In the first three months of the year the employment rate registered un uptick (+0.8%). As a consequence of this phenomenon, firms' social aid requests (Cassa Integrazione) for unemployed declined by 50 %.

Today, the South of Italy is experiencing an increase in the opened-to-closed balance of companies; this means that for every company that shuts operations down there are a few that are being started by entrepreneurs, particularly young ones.
