The Italian Constitutional Court issued two very important rulings for our country. The historically most important role of the Italian Constitutional Court - which is a body similar to, but not the same as, the Supreme Court in the US - is to rule on the constitutionality of laws and acts having the force of law issued by the State and Regions. The Court is tasked with verifying whether legislative acts have been enacted through procedures required by the Constitution and whether their content aligns with constitutional principles.
Yesterday’s rulings concern civil rights. With the first ruling, the Court effectively legalized the recognition at birth of children born to lesbian couples. Italian children born through heterologous fertilization performed in countries where it is legal (it is not legal in Italy) can now have two mothers.
