Just a few years ago, the Fonticelle trail was one of many forgotten mountain paths near a small rural town in the Molise region of southern Italy. But during the pandemic in 2020, the path was restored and became the heart of a new cultural initiative designed to bring contemporary art to an unexpected place: Frosolone, a mountain village of fewer than 3,000 residents in the province of Isernia.
Nestled in the natural landscape surrounding the town, the area known as Fonticelle now lends its name to an artist residency program with a central theme: the idea of “home.” Historically, this path was traveled by farmers heading to their fields or to the local market, and women carrying out daily chores like washing clothes.
