The Piazza d'Italia in the Central Business District was designed in the 1970s as the catalyst to broader revitalization of an aging stretch of Tchoupitoulas Street. The revival never happened and the landmark has spent recent years pushed behind parking lots.
Nearly 40 years later, five real estate development teams have submitted ideas to the city for re-imagining the public space that surrounds the landmark, according to proposals released Thursday (Aug. 6) by Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration.
