Simone Moro, an elite among a very rare breed that climbs the world's highest mountains in winter, will make a presentation in Portland on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Here's what Ed Viesturs says about such endeavors in the foreword of Moro's book, "The Call of the Ice," recently translated from Italian to English and published by the Mountaineers Books of Seattle:
"Climbing 8,000-meter peaks is one of the most physically difficult and mentally challenging endeavors that humans have ever attempted. Steep terrain. Hurricane-force winds. Subzero temperatures. Blinding snowstorms. Near impossibility of rescue. Constant discomfort . . .then there is Simone . . .he climbs these peaks in winter."
